In Love of Makkah We Meet

Makkah is a sacred city that Allah has blessed and made the host of its ancient house(the Ka’aba) , which is also the Qibla, the direction which every Muslim face in his/her prayer five times a day. For this reason and many others, Makkah is in the minds and hearts of each  and every Muslim male or female all over the world . Makkah’s significance stems from its honorable position , being the birth place of the prophet Mohammad  (peace be upon him) , where the Holy Koran was revealed , word of God to human kind .

Makkah, in modern time, has undergone a major and remarkable development , in its infrastructure and urban planning . For although-  it is a vast valley surrounded by mountains- these obstacles did not prevent the authorities from fostering the development of the city.  New and modern nets of tunnels and highways that connect the city from its four boarders, east to west and north to south were built . The city center is also witnessing remarkable changes and growth manifested in the major architectural projects under way. It expected that the city, in the near future, will be able to host twelve million visitors yearly,  from all over the world .

  Makkah is also chosen as the capital  of Islamic culture which emphasizes its importance and role in the lives of all Muslims. Having dwelled on the city and its historical significance , it is the pleasure of the municipality of the holy capital to announce the first Islamic meeting to ingrate the Makkah beatification project. The first stage will include  inviting selected artists and intellectuals from various parts of the Islamic world to attend the meeting, participate in  discussions , and visit the sites which are designated for the murals painting . The second phase will be devoted to receiving designs of the murals from the participants, evaluate   their merits and qualities , and choose the ones that meet the standard set forth by  the consulting committee. Thirteen murals  will be selected by a committee of referees to be later executed in different part of Makkah.

Makkah is the Meeting Place of Cultures and Civilizations

Makkah is the cradle of culture and civilization , the focal point of human philosophy, and the melting pot of traditions and Islamic custom.  As a results  Islamic art and architecture  are best manifested in Makkans art through the ages. However, the city of Makkah in modern days lacks the touch of art and beauty.  Public art is increasingly becoming a phenomenon in modern cities, and the city of Makkah should not be an exception .  The art, culture, and tradition of Makkah is so rich that it should be evident in every and each corner of the city,  through works of art that draw upon them. 

Public art adds a touch of beauty to the environment ,  provides a sense of aesthetic, and a chance for the people to contemplate and reflect on  their experience and the experience of others. Beautification of the environment , by work of art, whether in form of sculptures or murals, is increasingly becoming an important element in enhancing the positive role art plays  in our lives and culture.

The modern trend in urban planning and architecture landscaping is the integration of man and his environment. For man is always able to create an environment that he aspires to , and which in turn gives him  happiness and pleasure , art in this sense is not a frivolous but a necessity.
